Our time on the Discovery was the highlight of our visit to Alaska in May/June 2018. From Anchorage we went to the Port of Whittier on the Prince William Sound, which is largely a wilderness area. We boarded our small launch about lunch time, in time for hors d’ oeuvres before we headed off into the Sound. The Discovery had accommodation for 12 guests in 6 cabins, together with 4 crew. My wife was taken aback to find that we had to share the two bathrooms and sleep in bunks. In spite of all this we all rubbed along together well, and the chef feed us exceptionally well with meals also accompanied by an extensive range of wines. The procedure was to have two expeditions each day during our five days. This could involve kayaking along the face of a glacier in the broken pieces of ice, or a walk on a small island to see Beaver dams or other wildlife. One of the crew was a naturalist who accompanies tours to Antarctica as one of his contract activities. We really enjoyed it, but it does require a decent level of fitness to get the most from the daily activities.
