Overview
The Classic Discovery Voyage explores the natural wonders of Prince William Sound. Years of travel and exploration have resulted in a destination list of must-see places including wildflower meadows, rainforest trails, calving glaciers, whale watching, breathtaking waterfalls, shore side hikes, and kayaking in the protected bays and fjords.
This voyage is offered in lengths of 5 – 7 days, with the longer trip giving us the ability to venture further into the Sound and allowing for exploration of additional glaciers, bays, and more opportunity for whale watching.
The Classic Voyage is geared towards all activity levels, and is a common trip for retired parents to enjoy with their adult “children”!

Itinerary
Discovery staff will pick you up from your accommodations for a private shuttle along the scenic Turnagain Arm en route to Whittier for a warm welcome and appetizers aboard the Discovery. Enjoy lunch while sailing to a hiking destination. Take a hike through a lush rainforest and photograph the various mosses, lichens, ferns and delicate wildflowers found along the fen waterways. Return to a plate of scrumptious appetizers to pair with your glass of wine, followed by a delicious dinner featuring local seafood, or an alternate for our non-fish lovers! Anchor in a secluded cove for the evening.
Mornings aboard the Discovery are relaxed with a hot, home-cooked breakfast. Sail through Knight Island and Dangerous Passage towards Icy Bay. Some of the Sound’s most frequent orca & humpback whale sightings are found along this route; keep your eyes peeled for dorsal fins. Navigate Nassau Fjord to the terminus of Chenega Glacier, a 200-foot wall of ice that topples giant, blue chunks into the sea. Hundreds of harbor seals make Icy Bay their summer home. Take a hike up and alongside the glacier for a much different perspective, followed by a relaxing dinner while the Discovery travels to the evening anchorage.
Visit a raucous Steller sea lion haul en route to an impressive 300-foot waterfall. Take a short zodiac ride ashore for a guided hike to the top of this thundering waterfall and look out at the scenery around the bay. Next is a visit to Oyster Dave’s farm. Continue through Wells Passage to the fringes of College Fjord for the evening’s anchorage.
Awake to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery—corridors of breathtaking beauty, sprawling glaciers, and a panoramic skyline of mountain grandeur. Harbor seals hauled out on the flotillas of icebergs watch closely as the Discovery navigates the icy, blue waters of Barry Arm. Here we will launch the kayaks to paddle through the ice, and see the glacier from yet another perspective! Explore this magnificent area before the evening anchorage.
Spend the morning exploring the wonders of Harriman Fjord and Surprise Glacier. Hike along the shore among beached icebergs stranded by the ebbing tide. Enjoy lunch while the Discovery goes deeper into the ice-filled fjord for another kayak excursion, passing harbor seals, sea otters and numerous cascading waterfalls.
Awake immersed in a wilderness sanctuary of unparalleled natural beauty. Take in the morning light on the deck of the Discovery while enjoying a hot cup of coffee or tea. These spellbinding sights and dramatic sounds leave you humbled and feeling insignificant amidst this powerful living landscape. Enjoy one last hike before returning to Whittier where you meet your private shuttle back to Anchorage. Overnight in Anchorage at your accommodations (included).
