The Discovery Canine Crew
Discovery Voyages has always been an Alaskan family operation. We continue with this Family tradition and usually have our seasoned veteran boat dog, Happy D. Dog (a black lab) onboard. There could also be crew member Megan's well trained dog Hutch (or Hutchy Bear as we call him) and/or possibly her Alaskan Husky sled dog, Willow, onboard. Both are seasoned veterans of Prince William Sound and the Discovery. This season, we’re planning on continuing with one or two dogs onboard. Past guests can attest that the dogs have enriched their experience by adding to the “family atmosphere” and creating an even more memorable experience.
On board, dogs sleep in the wheelhouse, are never allowed in the galley, and are kept out of the lounge during meals. Dogs stay on board the vessel when we are in sensitive wildlife habitat and are kept under control so as to not interfere with photographic opportunities. The dogs go to shore early each morning via skiff with Captain Dean, on most hikes during the day, and at the end of each day before bed (like walking your pet in the park … you know what we mean). If you have any questions or concerns about dogs on board, please contact us.
Happy

the Discovery under the watchful
eye of Captain Dean.
Happy is a well-trained Black lab that joined the Discovery crew in 2005. He was raised on board and is a seasoned veteran. He is a favorite of guests on the Discovery. On shore excursions he entertains with his tireless efforts to retrieve small icebergs floating on the waters and large sticks from the temperate rainforest. On board the Discovery, he is usually found sunning himself on the back deck, napping in the wheelhouse, or, like all Labradors, keeping a sharp eye on his food bowl, imagining it magically refilling.
Hutch
Hutch - Animal lookout.
Hutch is a well-bred “prince of a mutt” originally from Alaska Dog and Puppy Rescue. He is a 5-year-old mixed breed, who has started his career in competition Rally Obedience Trials. He has also earned his Canine Good Citizen award from AKC. Obtaining therapy dog status is in his future. He is our on board animal lookout, and can be found all hours of the day on the deck, often spotting sea animals before the humans! (If you’re wondering where the wildlife is, look at which way Hutch is staring.) His calm and distinguished personality makes him a special addition on board.
Willow
Willow, the Alaskan Husky
Willow is a 3-year-old Siberian Husky mix, adopted from Anchorage Animal Control. She was likely a sled dog before becoming a stray. She is ultra-affectionate, but also understands “no.” Willow is in training to receive her AKC Canine Good Citizen award this spring. She is often found following around the older dogs, or sitting under the hand of a guest. Her whimsical personality and Husky heritage makes her a guest favorite.
On most cruises, only one or two dogs will be aboard, while the other(s) stay on shore in Whittier. Again, if you have any concerns about the presence of our canine crew, please call us at 1-800-324-7602 or email us.

On most voyages only one or two of our animal companions will be on board. Here all three wait in the Zodiak for Captain Dean to take them ashore for a bathroom break.
